Betteye Jean Perkins

May 27, 1934 — March 5, 2026

Citronelle, Alabama

Betteye Jean Perkins, a cherished educator, devoted mother and grandmother, and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on March 5, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on May 27, 1934, in Memphis, Tennessee, Betteye dedicated her life to serving others, both in her profession and her community.

Betteye pursued her passion for teaching, earning a Bachelor's degree in English from Mississippi College. Over the span of more than 30 years, she shared her love of language as an English and Spanish teacher, nurturing the minds of countless students. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom; from 1961 to 1969, Betteye and her husband, Ira Perkins, served as missionaries in Brazil, where she educated local children in English, fostering their development and bridging cultural gaps.

Her contributions to her church were equally profound. She was a dedicated member of Lockler Memorial Baptist Church for 22 years. Betteye played a vital role in the lives of her fellow parishioners at many different churches, teaching Sunday school, playing the piano, and leading the Women’s Missionary Union. Her faith was an essential pillar of her life, guiding her actions and inspiring those around her.

Betteye was known for her loving and caring nature. She had a passion for cooking, delighting in preparing meals for family and friends. Her home was a haven where her grandchildren spent joyful summers, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and warmth. Family was the center of Betteye's universe, and her pride and joy stemmed from her relationships with her son, Roger Perkins (Pamela), her grandchildren, Sunny Harrison (Kenneth) and Roger Perkins II (Christy), and her great-grandchildren, Austin, Noah, Micah, and Luke.

She is survived by her son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as her cousins, nieces, and nephew, including Ronnie White, Sissie Ferguson, Judy McElyea (Lonnie), and Herky Sullins (Perry), along with many other relatives and friends who will remember her kindness and the joy she brought into their lives.

Betteye was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Perkins; her parents, Daddy Paul and Mama Cotsey Williams; and her siblings, Mamie White (Cleveland) and Bill Williams (Janice). While her absence will be deeply felt, her legacy of love, compassion, and dedication will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she touched.

Friends and family are invited to honor Betteye's life at her funeral service, which will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Lockler Memorial Baptist Church with Bro. Roger Perkins and Bro. Kenneth Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Community Cemetery.
