Cecil Earl Driskell, a beloved member of the Mount Vernon community and a dedicated family man, passed away peacefully at his home on June 3, 2025. Born on July 15, 1934, Cecil was a lasting presence in the lives of many and contributed significantly to his town during his lifetime.
Cecil was known for his deep involvement in local affairs. He served the community in various capacities, including being a member of the Mt. Vernon JC's and actively participating in the Mt. Vernon Fire Department and Rescue Squad. His commitment to public service was exemplified during his long tenure on the town council for 41 years, which included six months as mayor. Cecil’s leadership and dedication were further recognized when he was ordained as a deacon in 1972, serving the majority of his ministry at Lockler Memorial Baptist Church.
Beyond his public service, Cecil was a devoted family man. He is survived by his three children: Donna Martin (Mike), Debbie Conaway, and Bill Driskell (Nancy). He took great joy in his role as a grandfather to Brandi Mosely (Travis), Jennifer Richmond (Beau), Erin Byrd (Joe), Robert Martin, and Heather Driskell, as well as being known as "Pawpaw" to his seven great-grandchildren. Cecil also leaves behind his brother, Billy Driskell, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who cherish the time they spent with him. Cecil Earl Driskell was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Alice Driskell, as well as his parents, Leland Driskell and Sarah Hunter, and siblings Ann Gartman, Eva Wheat, and Leland Driskell, Jr.
Cecil's passions extended to various hobbies and interests. He was a member of the Joe Southall Masonic Lodge for over 60 years, enjoyed gardening, loved fishing and shrimping, and spent time tinkering with cars. His career in civil service allowed him to travel and experience life beyond the shores of Mt. Vernon, but his heart always resided within his community.
Cecil's legacy will be honored with a visitation held on Friday, June 6, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at Lockler Memorial Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Alabama at 11:00 AM with Bro. Rodger Perkins officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Community Cemetery.
His impact on the lives of those who knew him will forever be remembered, ensuring that while he may have departed from this world, his spirit and contributions to the community and his family will live on in every heart he touched.
