Francis "Gene" Evans, born October 13, 1939, passed away on September 5, 2026. He will be remembered with love for the joy he found in simple pleasures and for the devotion he gave to his family throughout his life.
Gene was an avid fan of Alabama football and enjoyed spending time fishing. He also loved playing the guitar and bluegrass music, interests that reflected a life marked by enjoyment of fellowship, tradition, and the things that brought people together. Among the moments he treasured most was the time he spent with his children and grandchildren, a source of deep pride and lasting happiness in his life.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Debra Lofton (Marvin), Annie Evans, and Anthony "Yank" Evans (Stacey); grandchildren, Hank "Philo" Sullivan (Chasity), Ginia Lofton, Marlana Thompson (Chris), Marcus Weaver, Danny Weaver, Sidney Davis (Justyn), Constance Bates (Josh), Mickey Lofton (Crystal), Curtis Reed (Shantel), Breanna Oswald (Kyle), Anthony "Man Man" Evans (Kristy) and Amber Evans; a multitude of great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Carol Evans; sister, Patsy Webb; many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha “Pee Wee” Evans; his sons, Nicky Byrd and Wayne Evans; his father, Anthony Evans; his mother, Annie Evans; his stepfather, Ace Moore; his brothers, Charles Evans and James Evans; and his sister, Josephine Moss.
Family and friends will carry Gene’s memory forward with affection and gratitude, remembering the love he shared and the life he lived.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Freeman Funeral Home with Bro. George Weaver and Bro. Robert Byrd officiating. Burial will take place at Byrd Cemetery.
