Genevieve Turner Denton

September 13, 1928 — January 15, 2024

Citronelle, Alabama

Genevieve Turner Denton was born on Friday, September 13,1928, and passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024. Her family affectionately referred to her as “Mamaw.” She was living at her home in Hoover, Alabama, at the time of her death. She had moved to the Birmingham area from Citronelle, Alabama several years ago to be closer to immediate family. The family is struggling to explain the total significance of the 95 years she was alive.

She was many things, but most of all Genevieve was a wonderful mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the first in her family to go to college and went with just ten dollars in her pocket. She had to work her way through college. One of her jobs was working in the Clarke College cafeteria in Newton, Mississippi where she met our father, William Everett Denton. By all accounts, he was smitten by her immediately.

Genevieve graduated from Woman’s College (now known as William Carey University) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1950. Everett was studying to be a minister at Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi when they married in 1950. She was an integral part of his ministry, and could preach a sermon if required. She worked 50 years in education, most of the time teaching high school English but she also taught adult education. Genevive treated everyone she encountered with dignity and so much love. She walked humbly with her God, and He was her most important passion.

Genevieve had a love for Christian missions, another of her passions. She loved to cook (and was very good) and enjoyed feeding the whole extended family. She was the youngest of eleven children.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Denton; her parents, Ira and Ginny Turner; and all of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her two children, Tim Denton (Angie) and Jenny Bain (Robert); six grandchildren, Will Denton (Allie), Luke Denton (Emily), Lacey Denton Lee (Eric), John Denton, Carl Bain, and Jennifer Bain; and four great grandchildren, Dylan Denton, Anderson Denton, Mae Denton, and Miller Denton.

Genevieve's family would like to thank the ladies who cared for her so sweetly: Linda Barnes for many years, Janice Moultry, Denise Scott, Marie Parks, Athena Johnson and her staff from In Good Hands Care.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 20, 2024, from 11:30 AM until the 1:00 PM funeral service at her home church, Bethel Baptist Church. Her long-time friend, Pastor Marvin Robinson, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to The Bethel Baptist Cemetery Fund, M-Power Ministries mpowerministries.org, Lottie Moon Christmas Offering at www.imb.org , or any other Christian mission organization of your choice.
