It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hunter Matthew Reed, an extraordinary young man whose life was tragically cut short on January 6, 2026, at the tender age of 17. Born on December 16, 2008, Hunter was a cherished son, brother, grandson, and friend, whose bright spirit and kind nature touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
A dedicated and exceptional student, Hunter was an honor roll student in the 11th grade at McIntosh High School, where he excelled not only academically but also as a vibrant member of the school's athletic community. He was an active participant on the football, basketball, and baseball teams, where he showcased his passion for sports and teamwork.
Hunter’s personality was as remarkable as his talents. Those who knew him would often say that if everyone was like Hunter, the world would be a better place. He embodied respectfulness and kindness, demonstrating an all-around mannerable spirit that endeared him to his peers and teachers alike.
His love for the outdoors was undeniable; he found joy in hunting and fishing, pursuits that allowed him to connect with nature and spend time away from the hustle of everyday life. Hunter was also a devoted animal lover, particularly fond of his chickens, which he cared for with enthusiasm. His infectious enthusiasm resonated in every aspect of his life, especially in the moments spent with family and friends, creating memories that will forever live on in their hearts.
Hunter is survived by his loving parents, Brooks and Kelly Reed; his brothers, Brooks Reed, Jr. and Taten Orso; his sisters, Lulu Orso and Ariyah "RyRy" Wright; and his adoring grandparents, Eric and Pricilla Rivers and Andre Orso. Hunter also leaves behind a multitude of aunts and uncles, cousins, other relatives, and many close friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Mary Lou Orso and Dolly Reed; his close friend and brother, Trent Rivers; and his great-grandparents. Their memories will continue to inspire those who carry the legacy of Hunter in their hearts.
A wake to honor Hunter’s life will take place at Freeman Funeral Home on Friday, January 9, 2026, from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A visitation will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Reed's Chapel Baptist Church from 1:00 PM, leading into the funeral service at 2:00 PM, with Bro. Chad Orso, Bro. Clevon Weaver, and Bro. Matt Rivers officiating. Burial will follow in Reed's Chapel Cemetery.
As we gather to remember Hunter, we hold tight to the memories, the laughter, and the love he brought into our lives. Though his time with us was fleeting, his impact was profound, and he will be dearly missed.
