John Clay Bassett, age 70, of Citronelle, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at his beloved camp.
John loved his family and was very protective and supportive of them all in anything and everything they did. He was never happier than when he was working with his hands – fixing something, building something, or tinkering with the machines he knew like old friends. He took pride in caring for his land and the lake he loved, making sure the fish and wildlife were always fed and thriving. The camp was his quiet place, where he spent countless hours fishing, thinking, and finding peace. And when the day was done, nothing brought him more joy than cooking for the people he loved, filling his home with food, laughter, and the comfort only he could create.
John is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 51 years, Charmaine Williams Bassett; son, John Clay Bassett II (Julie); daughters, Elizabeth McCain (Todd) and Maree Landrum (D.J.); grandchildren, Jackson Bassett, Aynsley McCain, AnnaBeth McCain, Anderson Bassett, and Piper Landrum; brother, Charlie Bassett (Terry); so many cousins he thought of as sisters and brothers; and his best friend and fishing buddy, Gail McCain.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Clay and Ruth Bassett; parents-in-love, Ken and Zea Williams; adored grandson, John Daniel Landrum; and a multitude of much loved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
We will celebrate John’s life at a graveside service at Gulfcrest Cemetery at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December, 13, 2025, and gather afterwards at the home of his brother-in-law, John Williams - 8275 North Street, Citronelle, Alabama 36522.
