John Herman Meinhardt, Jr. was called home to be with the Lord on March 22, 2026, at the age of 68, at his residence. Affectionately known as “Big John” to many and “Cajun John” to his hunting club, he was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and raised in Axis and Citronelle, Alabama. During his later adolescence, his family relocated to Belle Chasse, Louisiana, where he graduated from high school and spent most of his adult life. He worked as a boilermaker at the Alliance Refinery for over 25 years. In his later years, he found great peace in Fayette, Alabama, where he enjoyed a slower pace of life and the simple pleasures he held dear.
John was the son of the late John Meinhardt, Sr. and Mary Dobson Meinhardt. He was also preceded in death by his beloved siblings, Carmen, Collins, and Mary. He had a strong and enduring relationship with the Lord, his Savior, which guided him throughout his life and gave him strength, comfort, and peace.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Gwen, whom he cherished deeply, and their three children: John III (Mallory), Travis (Victoria), and Melissa (Edward). He was a devoted father and a proud and adoring grandfather who brought joy and laughter to his family. He gave each of his grandchildren special nicknames as a reflection of his love: Travis Jr. (T-Trav), Macy (Coconut), Karsyn (Pineapple), Madelyn (Gypsy Woman), Mia (Wishbone), Aribel (Twin), Isabel (Twin), and Morgan (Captain). He is also survived by his brothers, Conrad and Walter; his sisters, Ida and Roma; his cousin Andy (Paula) and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
John was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and a proud member of The Good Ole Boys Dog Hunting Club. He made many lasting friendships throughout his life and was known for the strong bonds he formed with those around him. The friendships he formed at the club were especially meaningful, and he treasured the time spent with his fellow members.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026 from 9:30 AM until the 11:00 funeral service at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father John Coghlan as celebrant.
Big John will be fondly remembered as a man who truly marched to the beat of his own drum. He was full of life, strong in spirit, and never afraid to be himself. He lived life on his own terms, with a bold and genuine heart, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew and loved him—unapologetically himself.
