Joseph Russell Newburn

Joseph Russell “Rusty” Newburn, of Vinegar Bend, Alabama, passed away at his home on September 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was 78.

Born on June 9, 1948, in Birmingham, Rusty was a man whose presence brought warmth wherever he went. He was known as joking, sweet, curious, talkative, and loving, and he truly never met a stranger. Those who knew him will remember his easy way with people, his generous spirit, and the joy he found in being with the ones he loved most.

Rusty graduated from Citronelle High School, where he played football and baseball. He went on to serve his country in the Army, including service in Vietnam and Germany. For most of his life, he worked as a lineman at Alabama Power, a career that reflected his steady commitment and strong work ethic.

Outside of work, Rusty enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures. He loved watching Alabama football and westerns, and he found happiness in fishing and hunting. Some of his greatest enjoyment came from watching his children and grandchildren play ball. He also loved to eat and to spend time with his family, which remained at the very center of his life. More than any other accomplishment, his family meant everything to him.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Gail Newburn. He also leaves behind his sons, Garrett Newburn and Lance Newburn (Jennifer). He was a proud grandfather to Georgia (Nate), Brody, Parker, and Pate. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry Newburn and Mark Newburn (Toni), along with nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends who will cherish his memory.

Rusty was preceded in death by his father, Roland Newburn, and his mother, Beatrice Newburn.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Freeman Funeral Home with Rev. Barton Turner officiating. Burial will take place at Deer Park Cemetery.

Joseph Russell "Rusty" Newburn lived a life grounded in service, hard work, laughter, and deep devotion to family. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing him.
