Katie Lee Sullivan

November 11, 1939 — July 31, 2019

Katie Lee Sullivan, a native and resident of Mount Vernon, Alabama, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was 79 years old. Mama Kate was born to Nancy and Cleve Weaver on November 11, 1939. At age 15, she married the love of her life, McKinley Sullivan “Sonny Boy” and had 3 children. They were happily married for 56 years throughout which time she accomplished many things in the Calcedeaver Community. Mama Kate worked in the cafeteria at Calcedeaver School for 26 years before retiring. She was a devoted Christian woman and a lifelong member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, and Simple House of Praise Church. Her home was always an open door to anybody who wanted to come. She always had a hot meal on the stove. Whether she took food to others or fed people in her home, Mama Kate never let anybody miss a meal! She was the world’s best cook and baker. Not only did she feed the community, she took care of the community, including taking in and raising her niece, Destiny Byrd. She also served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Pleasant Grove Byrd Church Cemetery Board for many years. Most of all, Mama Kate loved her family unconditionally and they, along with the Calcedeaver Community, will miss her dearly. Mama Kate was preceded in death by her husband, McKinley Sullivan “Sonny Boy”; parents, Nancy and Cleve Weaver; seven siblings; one grandson; and one great grandson. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Ralph Sullivan (Missy), David Sullivan (Regina), and Richard Sullivan (Loretta); twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren with three on the way; one great great grandchild on the way; sister in law, Minnie Lee; a host of devoted nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. A wake will be held for Mama Kate from 6pm until 9pm on Friday, August 02, 2019, at Freeman Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 11am Saturday, August 03, 2019, at Simple House of Praise Church with Rev. Dean Hopkins and Rev. Dunford Cole officiating. Burial will follow in Byrd Cemetery. The family wishes to extend our gratitude to all of the friends and community for all of their loving compassion shown to us during this time.
