Mattie Maude Byrd

Mrs. Mattie Maude Herring Byrd, 89, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Sumter Health & Rehab in York, AL. Born February 23, 1936, in Silas, AL, she was the youngest child of George L. and Mattie Waite Herring. She was the widow of Herbert Alan Byrd, who preceded her in death in April 2000 after forty years of marriage. A homemaker most of her married life, “Grantee,” as she was called by her grandchildren, soon took on that nickname with so many others who knew and loved her. 

Mattie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, along with all of her brothers and sisters, Bessie Herring Fagan, Roy Herring, Nettie Vee Herring Walker, Mae Bell Herring McLaughlin, Ollie Herring Martin, Frank Herring, and Raymond Herring, along with two infant siblings. Surviving are two daughters, Marie Craddock (Tim) of Siloam, and Susan Campbell (Brad) of Livingston; four granddaughters, Shelby Berry (Graham) of Foley, AL, Haley Baker (John William) of Alabaster, AL, Michelle Campbell of Foley, AL, and Karla Braswell (Cross) of Enterprise, MS; and two great-granddaughters, Paisley Braswell and Mattie Rae Braswell of Enterprise, MS. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Ralph Byrd of Siloam, along with many nieces, nephews, and other family members. 

The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff of Meridian Living, Sumter Health & Rehab, and Southern Care Hospice for their care and kindness. Services will take place at Siloam Baptist Church, York, on Tuesday, September 2, at 11:00 a.m., with her sons-in-law Rev. Tim Craddock and Rev. Brad Campbell officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Siloam Cemetery. 

Pallbearers will be Ashton Ashe, Michael Ashe, John William Baker, Graham Berry, Cross Braswell, Ronnie Harwell
