Melba Jeanette Martin, affectionately known as “Maw,” passed away on April 9, 2024. She was born in Sims Chapel, Alabama and moved to Citronelle after marrying the one love of her life, Bobby Martin, who preceded her in death by two months.
Jeanette began her career in the education field as a substitute teacher in the early sixties. She eventually served as a teacher aid, library clerk, and retract teacher. She loved her daily trips to the post office and grocery store which was an opportunity for her to visit with the many people she knew.
After “Maw and Paw” retired, her focus was trying out new recipes and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The door was always open and the coffee was always hot for the many friends who knew and loved her. Rest assured, she loved to talk and hug!
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, John Jr. and Ida Johnston; husband of 73 years, Robert “Bobby” Martin; son, Robert C. “Cookie” Martin; grandson, Landon Hester; and siblings, Mell Johnston, Arnold Johnston and Connie Johnston.
She is survived by her children, Mike Martin (Donna), Terry Martin, and Allison Hester (Steven); grandchildren, Brooke Blount (Jeremy), Erin Byrd (Joe), Leslie Sullivan (Jeremy), Lauren Martin (Felisha), Robert Martin, and Avery Grace Hester; siblings, Ray (Bonnie) Johnston, Gloria Bailey, and Charlie Johnston; ten great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; along with special care givers, Jennifer Rivers, Ashley Johnston and Vital Care Hospice.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until the 12:00 PM funeral service on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Living Word Church with Rev. Marc Hobbs officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.
