Mitchel Palmer Chestang, known to family and friends as Mickey, passed away peacefully at his residence on August 4, 2023. He was born on May 24, 1957.
Mickey dedicated over forty years of his life to working as a professional tree surgeon. He found great joy in the exhilarating rush he experienced while topping trees. His career allowed him to showcase his skills and expertise in a field that he loved dearly.
Outside of work, Mickey embraced numerous hobbies and interests. He had an unwavering love for hunting and cherished the moments spent sharing stories with his friends and brothers. Additionally, he found solace in going fishing with his cousin, Barry—a pastime that brought them closer together.
Alabama football held a special place in Mickey's heart, and he followed the team fervently. Engaging in yard work and gardening with his wife, Janet, were also sources of happiness for him. Through these activities, he found peace in nature's beauty and nurtured his green thumb.
A man of easy-going nature and kindness, Mickey was known for his humility and good-heartedness. His genuine character touched the lives of many, as he always went out of his way to extend warmth and compassion to those around him.
One of Mickey's proudest accomplishments was bravely facing non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma head-on in 2015. With remarkable resilience, determination, and the support of loved ones, he defeated the disease and remained in remission until this year.
Mitchel Palmer Chestang is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Janet Chestang. Together they created countless precious memories that will forever be cherished. He also leaves behind siblings, Nadine Evans, Donnie Chestang (Sallie Chestang), and Kenny Chestang (Saifon Kearttikan Chestang). Among his nieces and nephews are Doug Evans (Tara Evans), Lisa Sullivan (Bo Sullivan), Shannon Wilson (Andy Wilson), Lara Mobley (Brent Mobley), Allison Chestang Stoker (Shane Stoker), Caroline Chestang, Mary Frances Chestang, and Clint Chestang.
Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, McKinley Chestang and Dotha Louise Chestang; as well as his brothers, Roy Chestang, and Neil Chestang. Their memories will forever be treasured and their spirits kept alive through the stories shared by loved ones.
To honor the life of Mickey, a visitation will be held on August 7, 2023, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the same location, with Bro. Gary Pickard and Bro. Dwight Weaver officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Moriah Cemetery. It is an opportunity for family, friends, and acquaintances to come together and pay their respects to a remarkable individual whose presence touched countless lives.
Mickey will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his profession, his love for nature and outdoor activities, and his kind and humble nature. His memory will live on as a beacon of inspiration for all those who had the privilege of knowing him. As we say our final goodbyes, let us carry forward the lessons he taught us—love unconditionally, embrace life's adventures with enthusiasm, and treat others with unwavering kindness.
