Newell "Jake" Rivers

Newell "Jake" Rivers, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family at the age of 68. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend who had an exceptional passion for his work and a deep love for children. Newell, born on December 20, 1954, in Mount Vernon, Alabama, left behind a legacy filled with laughter and cherished memories.

Throughout his life, Newell's proudest accomplishment was becoming a Class A CDL log truck driver. With his CB handle "Swamp," he navigated the roads with expertise and professionalism. His commitment to his job was admirable and he took pride in every mile he traveled.

Outside of work, Newell had a vibrant personality that could light up any room. He loved to tease and joke around, always bringing smiles and laughter to those around him. His great sense of humor was infectious and left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Newell's passion extended beyond his job and humor; he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with children. Whether it was his own children or grandchildren, each child held a special place in his heart. His love for them knew no bounds, and their happiness meant the world to him.

In addition to his career and dedication to family, Newell had a range of hobbies that brought him joy. He relished playing pedru and poker with friends, engaging in friendly competition while creating unforgettable memories. Standing around a fire with friends was another favorite pastime that allowed for bonding and storytelling.

Newell Rivers touched the lives of many, and his loss is deeply felt by his surviving family,  friends, and community. He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Earline Rivers; sons, Charlie English, Bruce Wayne Smith, Brian Keith Sullivan, Brent Lee Sullivan, Anthony Newell Snow, and Brent Sullivan Jr.; daughter, Shanta Grace Rivers; brothers, Travis Evans (Allie), Stan Rivers (Vera), Roy Rivers (Delphine), and Charles Rivers (Patricia); sister, Ola Rivers; aunts, Rutha Mae Weaver and Penny Davis; special granddaughter, Shawna Nicole Smith; special nephew, Lance Rivers; special friends, Keith Jordan and Curvin Rivers; twenty adored grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends.

Newell was preceded in death by his parents, Dolee Rivers and Printella Cole; and his mother/aunt, Martha Rivers Byrd. 

To honor Newell's life and celebrate the joy he brought to those around him, visitation services will be held on September 28th, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Freeman Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place on September 29th, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Saint Theresa Catholic Church. burial will follow at Byrd Cemetery.


Newell "Jake" Rivers will forever be remembered for his dedication to his profession, love for children, infectious humor, and zest for life. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable individual, we find solace in the countless memories that will continue to bring laughter and fond remembrance for years to come. May he rest in eternal peace.
