Reese A. Johnston, born on May 21, 1979, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026, at his home. He was surrounded by the love of his family during his final moments. Reese was a man who brought joy and laughter to those around him, known for his infectious personality and love for teasing and engaging with others. He was truly loved by everyone who had the fortune of knowing him.
A passionate enthusiast, Reese enjoyed spending his time playing pool, watching races, and following Alabama football. He also cherished trips to the casino and playing card games, activities he often shared with his treasured family and friends. Among his proudest accomplishments were his unwavering faith in God and the deep bonds he formed with his beloved family, especially his children and grandchildren.
Reese is survived by his devoted wife, Wendy Byrd-Johnston; his children, Tavy Berry (Jordan), Bryanna Rivers (James Baggett), and Layla Byrd; and his cherished grandchildren, A.B., Reeselee, and J.B. He leaves behind his loving mother, Neta Byrd; mother-in-law, Alpha Byrd; and a caring array of siblings: Chasity Barnes (Ernest), Shane Johnston, Gary Johnston, Sharon Pressley (Charles), James Hobby, Heidle Reed, and Jennifer Challender. Reese is also remembered fondly by his grandmother, Katie Miller; his nieces, Navaya Barnes, Maya Salinas, and Nova Barnes; and a wide circle of in-laws, including Nick Byrd (Sue), Terrell Weaver (Michelle), Tex Byrd, Jr. (Deborah), Sadie Taylor (Gene), and Octavia Collins (Chad), along with his aunt, Martha Johnston. He is also survived by many other relatives and close friends who will hold his memory dear.
Reese was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Connie Aaron Byrd; his fathers, Connie Johnston and Leroy Byrd; his father-in-law, Tex Byrd, Sr.; brother-in-law, Dave Weaver, Jr.; and his nephews, Ashton Challender and Jeremiah Reese Salinas.
A Rosary will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Freeman Funeral Home beginning at 5:45 PM, followed a wake from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A Mass will be celebrated in his honor the following day on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Saint Theresa Catholic Church with Father Victor Ingalls as celebrant. Burial will follow in Byrd Cemetery.
Reese A. Johnston will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, unwavering faith, and the love he shared with his family and friends.
