RJ Newburn

May 25, 1939 — October 12, 2023

Citronelle, Alabama

Roy J. Newburn, a man who always had a joke to tell, left this world surrounded by his loving family on October 12, 2023. Born on May 25, 1939, Roy was a devoted husband, proud father, and doting grandfather. His passing has left an everlasting void in the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A visitation will be held to celebrate RJ's life on Monday, October 16, 2023 from 1:00 PM until the 2:00 PM funeral service at Freeman Funeral Home with officiating. Burial to follow in Cedar Creek Brethern Cemetery.

RJ's sense of humor brought joy and laughter to all those around him. He had a unique ability to lighten any situation with his comical remarks and witty comebacks. His jokes were legendary within his circle of family and friends. But it wasn't just his humor that endeared him to others; RJ's unwavering commitment to his family was unmatched.

A true family man, RJ was fiercely protective of his loved ones. The happiness and well-being of his wife and children were always at the forefront of his mind. RJ adored his wife Jewell Newburn, with whom he shared an incredible journey spanning over 52 years of marriage. Their love was a beacon of light for all who witnessed it.

RJ's proudest accomplishments included being the president of Little Creek Hunting Club for numerous years and the joy he found in spending time with his grandchildren - especially Austin, Kortnie, and Jake. He cherished these moments as golden memories etched in the tapestry of his life.

In addition to his beloved wife Jewell Newburn, RJ is survived by their four children: Mack Joseph Newburn (Mary Ann), Ronnie Harold Newburn (Laura), Alice Marie Douglas (John), and Kathryn Ann Crager (Donald Wayne). He also leaves behind twenty-three grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and many friends. RJ's parents, Roy and Lillie Newburn, his children Terry Lee Newburn and Roy Steve Newburn, his sister Marie Jordan, and brothers Wallace Newburn and Jr Sullivan preceded him in death.

RJ had a wide range of interests outside of family life. He found solace in the great outdoors while hunting and fishing. His mechanical aptitude led him to pursue truck driving and car racing as hobbies. RJ's passion for making smoked sausage and bacon with his brother Wallace in their smokehouse was legendary among friends and family.

As we bid farewell to Roy J. Newburn, let us remember the love he shared, the laughter he brought into our lives, and the memories we hold dear. In our hearts, he will forever remain an enduring source of strength, humor, and devotion. May his soul find eternal rest.
